The Likely Range of Climate Sensitivity

چکیده

The IPCC suggests a “likely range” for the equilibrium climate sensitivity of atmospheric carbon dioxide. At the recommended upper limit of this likely range, the calculated temperature rise (using the quasi-steady approximation) is found to be substantially higher than the observed historical data. Theoretically, the quasi-steady response is indeed expected to be higher than the actual (time dependent) response—the difference should be proportional to a (thermal inertia) time lag parameter τ . Estimates of the value of τ—based on currently available observational data—suggest that the upper limit for equilibrium climate sensitivity is significantly smaller than that suggested by the IPCC.

The effects of climate change on the distribution of an invasive fish in Iran: Gambusia holbrooki (Girard, 1859)

Today, invasive species are considered as one of the major threats to biodiversity and ecosystem functions. The suitable habitats of these species are expected to be expanded under the effects of future climate change hence it is likely to threaten the existence of native species. Consequently, identifying the current and potential distribution range of invasive species is essential for managem...

Modeling the effect of climate change to the potential invasion range of Piper aduncum Linnaeus

The potential effect of invasive plant species on biodiversity is one of most important subject of inquiry at present. In many parts of the world, the alarming spread of these plants has been documented. Knowing that climate exerts a dominant control over the distribution of plant species, predictions can therefore be made to determine which areas the species would likely spread under a climate...

Assessing the effects of ocean diffusivity and climate sensitivity on the rate of global climate change

The range in the projections of future climate warming can be attributed to the inherent uncertainty in the representation of climate model parameters and processes. In this study, we assess the effect of uncertainty in climate sensitivity and ocean heat uptake on the rate of future climate change. We apply a range of values for climate sensitivity and ocean diapycnal diffusivity in an ensemble...

Earth’s Climate Sensitivity: Apparent Inconsistencies in Recent Assessments

Earth's equilibrium climate sensitivity (ECS) and forcing of Earth's climate system over the industrial era have been re-examined in two new assessments: the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and a study by A. Otto and others (Nature Geosci., 2013). The ranges of these quantities given in these assessments and also in the Fourth (2007) IPCC A...

Estimating climate sensitivity and future temperature in the presence of natural climate variability

We use an initial condition ensemble of an Earth System Model as multiple realizations of the climate system to evaluate estimates of climate sensitivity and future temperature change derived with a climate model of reduced complexity under “perfect” conditions. In our setup, the mean and most likely estimate of equilibrium climate sensitivity vary by about 0.4–0.8°C (±1σ) due to internal varia...
